Lake Weed Removal and Aquatic Plant Management Services
Our results: safer than pesticides, longer lasting than harvesters.
Using chemicals or harvesters to treat lake weeds can help maintain your beach and property value, but can be damaging on a larger scale. Our method at Scuba Weed Control is more complete and natural, which helps protect your lake’s natural ecosystem. Take a look at our lake services
Submerged Lake Weed Removal:
Our experienced team of divers get to the root of your problem: the lake weeds! Our team specializes in removing some of the main nuisance weeds commonly found in Lake Minnetonka/ the Twin Cities, and Brainerd/ Cross Lake areas such as:
Milfoil (Eurasian Watermilfoil), Curly Leaf Pondweed (Crisp-leaved Pondweed), Coontail (Hornwort), Chara (Muskgrass, Stonewort), Eelgrass (Wild Celery Grass), Starry Stonewort, Waterweed (Elodea) and more. Our approach utilizes scuba gear and a team of certified divers to more efficiently hand remove the weeds from the root. This method is the most effective way to manage submerged aquatic weeds.
The results are immediate and last longer than harvesters, so after one visit from our crew, your swim area or boat path will be clear and ready for recreational use.
Lily Pad Removal and Lakeshore Restoration
Lily Pads are a beautiful aquatic plant and provide critical habitat for fish and other aquatic life, but an overabundance of lily pads can cause issues on lakes and ponds that are used recreationally.
Swimming and boating in areas of the lake where lily pads have completely taken over can be difficult and potentially dangerous. Depending on the severity, lily pad overgrowth can even pose a threat to the integrity of the lakeshore bottom and even the greater lake ecosystem.
Managing Lily Pads can be a frustrating task to undertake on your own, as the spider-web-like root system (tubers) is incredibly extensive (and often buried under muck and sediment,) and the pads themselves regenerate at an astonishingly fast rate.
Thankfully, our team at Scuba Weed Control specializes in removing lily pads and has an extensive history of helping lakeshore owners achieve clean, safe, usable waterfront access.
Lily pad management starts with assessing your situation, defining your goals and vision for your waterfront, and outlining the treatment area. Every lake, pond, bay, and channel may have different factors that contribute to lily pad growth and thus require a specifically tailored management plan. Once we assess your lakefront and develop a personalized service plan, our crew will begin the restoration process.
In most cases, we recommend multiple visits in the same season so our team can continually target active roots (tubers) in the assigned service area. As new pads grow, our divers will trace the stem of the plants down to the root and dig out the entirety of the root structure. Because of how wide-ranging lily pad roots can grow, it often takes multiple visits to eliminate the majority of the root structure. However, repeated treatments in the same area will lead to compounding improvements over time, even in the thickest areas on the lake.
Cattail Removal & Other Emergent Aquatic Plant Removal
Cattails can grow and spread quickly in lakes and ponds and may create problems for lakeshore owners when left unmanaged. If left unchecked, cattails can create an imbalance in the water body and choke out entire ponds. In other cases, Cattails can take over shoreline to the point where waterfront access is completely cut off.
If you are dealing with excess cattails our team can help you restore your pond or reclaim lakeshore access by removing the unwanted vegetation.
Our method of cattail removal includes the use of high-powered equipment specifically designed to combat thick aquatic vegetation. These tools are used to cut the cattails below the waterline, at the root to provide a more permanent solution. In some cases, our team will also use manual removal efforts to dig, pull, and dispose of cattail roots and bogs.
In addition to removing Cattails, our team also has experience removing Bulrushes, Purple Loosestrife, Flowering Rush, Lily Pads, and more. For the majority of projects dealing with the removal of Emergent Lake Vegetation, an Aquatic Plant Management permit from the Minnesota DNR is required. If you have not been issued an APM permit from the MN DNR, we can help coordinate the process to acquire one.
